The National Endowment for Indigenous Visual Arts.
The Indigenous art market is an important and central vehicle to meaningful reconciliation.
Indeed, it is perhaps the best vehicle to teach non-Indigenous Australia and the world about the significance and beauty of our unique heritage and culture.
The National Endowment for Indigenous Visual Arts (NEIVA) was established to enable commercial gallerists and the art market meaningfully contribute to the social, cultural and economic empowerment of Indigenous Australians.
How it works.
Proceeds from art sales are often the main or only source of non-government income for remote Indigenous Australian communities.
However, the primary and secondary Indigenous art markets do not currently generate sufficient revenue to support all artists and their working communities.
NEIVA provides a vehicle for ethical art market representatives to help steer industry change.
Is my organisation eligible for funding?
NEIVA can fund organisations that endorsed or are partnering with organisations endorsed as Item 1 Deductible Gift Recipient charities.
We are currently seeking expressions of interest from Indigenous governed art centres and affiliated service organisations who are seeking funding for projects aligned with our inaugural funding strategy.
Artist produces works (via art centre)
Gallerist exhibits work
Artwork sold to collector

Eligible community programs and organisations apply for funding
NEIVA advisory board reviews and recommends projects to fund
Donations paid to selected community programs and initiatives by NEIVA trustee

Funding Strategy.
The Challenge
Indigenous governed visual arts organisations (such as art centers and peak bodies) are key employers in remote communities, yet investment in their employees and capacity building is limited, compounding high staff turnover and difficult working environments.
The Broad Goal
Global recognition and appreciation for Australian Indigenous Visual Arts and its highly skilled and valued workforce. If we...
- Empower Indigenous governed visual arts organisations to identify and plan for their development needs and sustainability objectives; and
- Encourage Indigenous visual arts sector partnership and collaboration.
By...
- Supporting capacity building and professional development grants.
- Encouraging art centers to plan projects and initiatives that contribute to their sustainable future.
- Leveraging NEIVA’s funding to stimulate multi-year grants that demonstrate commitment to sector leading projects.
Then we will see…
- Increase in sector collaboration.
- Defined cases for support for additional investment in achieving capacity building goals.
This will lead to…
- Improved work environments and greater workforce succession plans.
- Greater appreciation in the need to invest in the people – not the product or services – of Indigenous visual arts organisations.
Governance.
NEIVA is a charitable account managed by an independent trustee company, Australian Executor Trustees. Donations paid by our partners are held in trust for charities aligned to NEIVA’s purpose.
Our Advisory Board
NEIVA’s advisory board is comprised of majority Indigenous Australians and representative of the communities we seek to support. The role of the advisory board is to determine which charities receive NEIVA distributions. The advisory board meets annually to determine which organisations, initiatives and communities are supported.
